The Sheaffer Pen Company selected authorized dealers to sell their pens. Walter Sheaffer began his professional career as a jeweler. Jewelry stores were among the stores that Sheaffer sought as authorized retailers.
Sheaffer made Balance pens, such as this one, with somewhat ornate cap bands. These pens are not found in any Sheaffer catalog. Sheaffer collectors speculate these pens were made exclusively for sale by authorized jewelry stores. They have been dubbed jewelers band pens.
Pens with straight line bands like this one, are not rare, though they are uncommon. This is a less common, uncommon pen. Most jewelers band pens are the thinner barrel Craftsman model with a #3 nib. I speculate the Craftsman pens were made on spec for jewelry store display cases. And that the larger, less common jewelers band pens like this one were only available by special order.
What makes this pen stand out is the Feather Touch 5 nib. One of the best nibs ever produced. Ever. It has the perfect amount of softness and bounce to produce mesmerizing line variation under normal writing pressure. So much fun and happiness.
This pen is in excellent condition with no plating loss and flawless celluloid. The ink view barrel has very good clarity and holds a lot of ink. The filler rod has been replaced with one made from black oxide coated, stainless steel. The filling system restoration is guaranteed for at least one year provided Noodler's ink is strictly avoided. It will melt the rubber in the filler and stain the barrel. There are several small pock marks in the grip section.
