1943-5 Carmine Sheaffer Triumph Tuckaway Valiant - fine-extra-fine point
1943-5 Carmine Sheaffer Triumph Tuckaway Valiant - fine-extra-fine point
This is a 2nd generation Sheaffer Triumph Tuckaway Valiant II. It is a pocket sized version of the largest Triumph Sheaffer made - the Valiant II. Though this is a much smaller pen (length 113 mm (4.45 in) compared to 131 mm (5.1 in)) it still has the same nib as the full sized pen. I think that big nib looks fabulous on such a diminutive pen. Though it is a pocket sized pen, the Tuckaway cap was made specifically to be posted. It is comfortable for me to use and I have large hands.
This pen has good color and clarity. The celluloid is unmarred apart from a couple of small marks on the filler knob. The plating is worn at the edges of the button clip exposing the silver (coin silver?) that Sheaffer used as a trim base metal during world war II.
The nib has been adjusted to write a wet, smooth, fine line. The filling system has been restored using modern synthetic seals. An occasional dab of 100% pure silicone grease on the filler rod will keep this pen working for several more decades. Despite its small size this pen will hold more ink than any modern cartridge or convertor.
