Black Sheaffer Balance Junior "Deluxe"
Black Sheaffer Balance Junior "Deluxe"
Walter Sheaffer began his fountain pen business in his jewelry store. When pens became his full time occupation he continued to favor jewelry stores as preferred dealers. Collector lore says pens like this with fancy cap bands were only available from those jewelry store Sheaffer retailers. Thus they've been dubbed "jewelers band" pens. There are several know variants of the special cap bands but none are shown in any Sheaffer catalog.
This pen is in excellent condition. The barrel clarity/transparency is perfect. The chrome plating has only 2 small spots of wear on each side of the clip ball. This is significant as chrome plating from this era often seems to take a wicked beating and endure it poorly.
The fine+ #3 nib is amazing and there are few modern nibs that perform on this level. It is soft and expressive and provides very nice line variation under normal writing pressure. Do be careful as it is not meant to be pushed like a flexible or even semi-flexible nib. It doesn't need to be pushed to be amazing.
This pen is comparable in physical dimensions to a modern Sailor ProGear Slim. The cap posts to provide ample length for comfortable writing - and I have large hands.
The filling system has been restored with modern materials that will last decades. This pen is in as close to new condition as it can be.
