~1962 blue Sheaffer 800 set (Dolphin) Touchdown
I had always thought the Sheaffer "Dolphin" predated the PFM and Imperial that were introduced in 1959. My assumption was the partially inlaid Dolphin nib was a stepping stone toward the fully inlaid version. When I restored this pen I set about some research and, as usual, PenHero.com fixed my preconceptions. The Sheaffer 500, 800 & 1000 were introduced in 1962. Most were cartridge fillers but some 500 & 800 pens were offered with Touchdown fillers.
I think the Touchdown filler is one of Sheaffer's best. It is simple, reliable and easy to service. Though I have installed a silicone sac in this pen that should last for years and years and also allow a wider range of acceptable inks.
This pen & pencil set is in like new condition and in the original box. Everything about it is flawless. The nib is round, smooth, wet and fine. It has the feel of a Sheaffer inlaid nib with a bit of softness rather than the rigidity of the earlier generation Sheaffer nibs.
