1947 Marine Green Sheaffer Triumph Sentinel Deluxe fountain & pencil
1947 Marine Green Sheaffer Triumph Sentinel Deluxe fountain & pencil
The Valiant, Crest Deluxe & Sentinel Deluxe are the largest Sheaffer Triumphs. They have celluloid, gold filled and steel caps, respectively. The Crest was available in a smaller size that is called simply Crest while the larger pen is a Crest Deluxe.
The Sentinel Deluxe seems to be the most difficult to find. I do not know if fewer were made/sold compared with Valiants. Or, perhaps they are popular with collectors and get snapped up before I get a chance at them. I love the Sentinels with brushed steel caps. The later versions with injection molded barrels have polished & engraved steel caps.
The caps of both pen and pencil have some damage. You can see the dimples above the pen clip and there is a minor flat spot in the band. The cap still posts securely if so desired. The pencil has a flat spot adjacent to the clip. Otherwise there is no plating loss and the celluloid is flawless. The ink view grip section has excellent color and clarity.
The pencil mechanism works though there is only a small stub of graphite. I have no spares but they can be purchased.
The nib is amazing. It writes a line probably classified in modern terms as a generous, western fine. When new it would probably have been classified as a medium. The vintage Sheaffer point sizes are comparable with modern Japanese pens. This one is wet and has a stubby shape that results in tasty line variation.
