Hidden - 1942-3 Carmine Sheaffer Triumph Tuckaway - fine nib
This is a 1st generation Sheaffer Triumph Tuckaway. There is an earlier Tuckaway from the Balance era but that pen is metal and has an open nib. The metal version was available with a lever filler. The Triumph Tuckaways are all Vacuum-Fil. Then the final Tuckaway, in 1949 is a Touchdown filler.
Other pen companies made small pens. The Tuckaway is unique and iconic - I think of it as the original little-big pen. Lots of the small pens are chatelaine pens with a ring on the top of the cap for the pen to hang from a chain worn round the neck. Those pens could not conveniently be used with the cap posted since the cap stayed attached to the chain. The Tuckaway cap was made specifically to be posted. It is comfortable for me to use and I have large hands.
This pen has very good color and clarity. The celluloid and plating are unmarred and gorgeous. The only flaw is some pitting in the chrome trim ring. The nib has been adjusted to write a wet, smooth, fine line.
The filling system has been restored using modern synthetic seals. An occasional dab of 100% pure silicone grease on the filler rod will keep this pen working for several more decades. Despite its small size this pen will hold more ink than any modern cartridge or convertor.
