Like many other companies they switched to making various things for the war effort. The far reaching impact of World War II is inconceivable to me.

When Sheaffer ramped up pen production again they introduced a second generation of the Triumph line that was first brought to market in 1942. It was a remarkable evolution. The new pens had longer grip sections made of celluloid, a spring loaded clip and multiple models and sizes. This Statesman is one of the larger models.

These are remarkable pens that write beautifully and hold a lot of ink. They are meant to be used with the cap posted to provide comfortable length. The tip of the nib is turned upward a bit. This was intentional and can be compared to the Waverly point though Sheaffer never used that name. It provides a tipping shape that suitable for any writing angle to the page. That seems like a gimmick but it is not. These are some of the best writing nibs made.

This pen is in amazing condition for 74 years old. The chrome plated trim is perfect - there is no plating loss on the clip or band and that is unusual. There are no flaws in the celluloid - the knob and cap peaks are undamaged by drops. The transparency is amazing and retains the greenish hue it had when new. Celluloid tends to darker, or amber, with exposure to UV light. This pen has been well cared for. The one minor flaw is a slight celluloid shrinkage gap between the barrel and knob as seen in the 3rd photo.

The nib writes a line between a modern Western extra-fine and a vintage fine. This was Sheaffer's 25 anniversary though I do not know if that has any correlation with the choice to name the different pen models. This pen would be called a Sovereign. Sheaffer also began including a price code in the barrel imprint. They were quite insistent that all retailers sell Sheaffer pens for the Sheaffer mandated price. There is a bit of wear to the plating on the cap band and the edges of the clip ball. The only notable thing about the celluloid is a faint posting ring at the end of the barrel. This is nearly inevitable on a small pen that must have it cap posted for use.

Many users are misled into believing the #3 nib is semi-flexible. It is not. I imagine there is a long conversation thread on Fountain Pen Network about how to decode the model numbers. I don't know how and I consider myself rather passionate about the pens. Instead I prefer to call the pens by the names they were given beginning in 1938. It's probably less efficient and harder to remember that something systematic and organized like an engineer would design and love. I just like the names better. Sheaffer also added the price code to the barrel imprint in 1938. It is evidence of the seam where the sheet of celluloid was welded into a cylinder to make the barrel.

Otherwise, the plating is perfect, the celluloid is perfect, the nib is luscious and the filling system is perfect. The Sheaffer Balance, Triumph and Snorkel era nibs are well known to be rigid, stiff nibs with absolutely no line variation. There are exceptions, like the Balance era Feather Touch 5. The inlaid nibs perform more like that exceptional Feather Touch 5. Both are not to be described or used as flexible nibs or even semi-flexible nibs. Excellent performers that are a joy to use.

Similarly the Touchdown filler is one of Sheaffer's best. The Sheaffer Vacuum-Filler holds more ink and gets my vote for favorite. But the Touchdown is far easier to service. It will likely need servicing slightly more often that a Vac but it will not require an expert to do so. Simply replace the sac and an o-ring. Both fill with the same style of extending the filler attached to the knob at the end of the pen, submerging the nib in ink then depressing the knob.

I have installed a silicone sac in this pen. Silicone lasts much longer than latex. It is also impervious to the nastiest inks. Not all pens are compatible with silicone sacs since they are gas permeable. I have been using this pen and it does not seem to have such an issue.

The nib is a medium point. It compares to a modern Japanese medium or Western fine. They replaced the entire Triumph line with the Touchdown. While the Triumph line was named for the first pen model - sort of like US Navy ship classes - the Touchdown line is named for the filling system.

The Touchdown filler is pneumatic and includes a sac. It's not an intricate or complex filler but it is somewhat difficult to explain the technical details. I find it simplest to liken it to a bicycle pump. That's not entirely accurate, but it's not too far off the mark. Unscrew the knob, extend the Touchdown tube, submerge the nib/feed/section in ink, close the Touchdown tube, wait a few seconds for the sac to fill with ink. Wipe off the section and you are good to go. The operation, apart from the few seconds waiting at the end, is exactly the same as the Vacuum-Fil.

The primary failure mode of the Touchdown pens is the end of the barrel. There is an o-ring groove inside to provide a seal with the Touchdown tube. This is a very thin portion of the barrel and prone to cracking due to plastic shrinkage from UV exposure. This pen has been well cared for and exhibits no hint of shrinkage or cracking - see the photos. As long as it is not stored in a sunny spot it will last for many more decades.

Note this is a first year Touchdown pen. It fits perfectly and you'd not know it was incorrect unless you were a collector or went scouring the fabulous pages of @penherostore's web site. If you did, then you'd also see the nib has lost it's palladium plating. That doesn't hinder performance in the slightest.

The ink view grip section has ambered and it has a few scuff marks where some fool used pliers to open the pen. They simply appended a II to each name. I wonder if this was a lack of imagination or a conscious marketing decision. The latter seems most likely. Much the same way auto companies keep successful model names for decades despite making dramatic change to the cars. The Valiant II was near the top end of the price spectrum of models. Only the metal cap pens and 14 karat trim models were more expensive. Though the trims are all that separate these models.

Most Triumph models had a Tuckaway model. The Tuckaway is a pocket pen that has all the identical features of the full size models, just smaller and with a button clip. The nib is the same size as that on the full size pen. The following year would feature the debut of the Touchdown. The most interesting change of the 4th generation Triumph is the injection molded, solid color barrels, caps and filler knobs. Sheaffer called the material Radite II - Radite was their name for the celluloid used from 1926 to 1947. Sheaffer had been injection molding the inner barrel & grip section unit since ~1946. The change brought interesting, new solid colors like umber and Persian blue. Umber is not a rare color but it is somewhat uncommon while black is the most common color.

A key thing to watch for when buying a pen from the 1947-1952 Radite II era is the condition of the plastic. It is softer than celluloid and the material used in the later Snorkel pens (1952-9). It is more susceptible to shrinkage, splitting and marring. The most common problem area is splits under the cap clip. That does not mean these pens should be avoided. If well cared for they are as robust as any other very well made Sheaffer pen.

This pen is in excellent condition. The plating is all intact and without blemish. There are only 2 minor spots, or flea bites, in the cap - one on either side of the clip. Yet the manufacturer's imprint and the filler knob knurling are deep and crisp as when new. The barrel has a bit of shrinkage that causes a portion of the filler knob to stand proud of the barrel. The inner barrel and ink view grip section have excellent clarity. The ends of the plunger and feed are clearly visible.

The filling system has been restored with modern, synthetic rubber that will last for decades. They were clearly not the focus. In fact, the first generation Triumph in 1942-3 carried no open nib models. The second generation had a couple of lower-tier models (e.g. Craftsman), the third generation brought the mid-tier Sovereign. It wasn't until the fourth and final generation that brought an upper tier pen in the Statesman. Sheaffer was certainly intent to make the conical Triumph nib the focal point. That does not mean the quality of the open nib pens was lacking. Not at all. The same Sheaffer attention to detail is evident.

This particular pen is difficult for me to identify. This model pen is not in the otherwise reasonably comprehensive model identification guide. I am confident it is a Sovereign based on the 875 ($8.75) price code and the long, slender nib. The nib profile is the same as that of the Balance Sovereign. It is stiffer than the Feather Touch 5 nib but less rigid than the monster thick Statesman nibs. It provides subtle line variation on my loops and descenders under normal writing pressure.

The pen is in very good condition. There are a few tiny dimples and flea bites in the cap and barrel. Though there is no posting ring. The plating is all intact and without blemish. There are several small pock marks in the grip section.

Length
Capped - 140 mm (5.1”)
Uncapped - 119 mm (4.7”)
Posted - 155 mm (6.”).
Diameter
Cap - 13.3 mm (0.53”)
Barrel - 11.5 mm (0.45”)

Filler
Vacuum-Fil

Nib
Fine

Vintage fountain pen collectors love to call this pen the Sheaffer Dolphin.
