Sheaffer seems to have reverted to this earlier filler rod for some pens produced in the wartime years. Perhaps stainless steel was not always readily available. The rod had rusted badly and the celluloid cover cracked. I've replaced it with a custom made rod from black oxide coated stainless steel. I believe this is an early production model because the 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) of the barrel binde nearest the grip section is transparent, allowing even better viewing of the ink level. I believe that is true because all those I've restored have celluloid covered, carbon steel filler rods but also price codes. These rods were made in the earliest Vacuum-Fil Balances in 1935 before Sheaffer switched to using stainless steel rods. The price codes (this pen is stamped 1000 below the manufacturer's imprint on the barrel) were introduced in 1938. So, this is a post-1938 pen with a pre-1936 filler rod. I believe that wartime shortages of stainless steel forced Sheaffer to revert to using the celluloid covered carbon steel rods. It was made in 1948.

My friend Paul dubbed this nib The Golden Spade. It is the same size as the nib from the Sheaffer Balance Premier (OverSize). Sheaffer ceased making the Balance Premier around 1942 when they switch their main line from Balance to Triumph. They made only a few pen models with small, standard, open nibs in the Triumph era. In 1948 they offered the Statesman with this big, beautiful Golden Spade nib. The Statesman was available in both a standard size pen and a Tuckaway. They were offered in 1948, the last year of the Sheaffer Vacuum-Filler and also in 1949, the first year of the Touchdown.

The nib writes a firm, wet, fine line. For a small pen it holds a surprising amount of ink. More than any modern cartridge or converter. The cap posts comfortably on the end of the barrel to make this pen easy to use for even those of us with large hands.

Length
Capped - 114 mm (4.5”)
Uncapped - 97 mm (3.8”)
Posted - 131 mm (5.15”)
Diameter
Cap - 12.5 mm (0.5”)
Barrel - 11.4 mm (0.45”)

Filler
Vacuum-Fil

Nib
Fine

People tend to call this pen an OverSize or OS. It is already quite aptly named the Premier.

It took Sheaffer decades to adopt model names in 1938. Prior to that time it was all base model numbers (2, 3, 5, 7, 8) along with a cryptic set of modifiers to indicate length, color and filling system. I imagine there is a long conversation thread on Fountain Pen Network about how to decode the model numbers. I don't know how and I consider myself rather passionate about the pens. Instead I prefer to call the pens by the names they were given beginning in 1938. It's probably less efficient and harder to remember that something systematic and organized like an engineer would design and love. I just like the names better. Sheaffer also added the price code to the barrel imprint in 1938. The 1000 on the barrel for $10 makes it obvious this pen should be called a Gray Premier Vacuum-Fil rather than an earlier E8W EBEXF.

The barrel has darkened, or ambered, slightly reddish. It remains transparent with good clarity. Otherwise, the plating is perfect, the celluloid is perfect, the nib is luscious and the filling system is perfect. I've restored it with modern materials and the vacuum is almost strong enough to use as a pogo stick.

Length
Capped - 142 mm (5.6”)
Uncapped - 122 mm (4.8”)
Posted - 163 mm (6.4”).
Diameter
Cap - 15 mm (0.6”)
Barrel - 12.8 mm (0.5”)
