My guess is the date is probably closer to 1940 since the original filler rod was celluloid covered carbon steel rather than stainless steel. Sheaffer seems to have reverted to this earlier filler rod for some pens produced in the wartime years. Perhaps stainless steel was not always readily available. The rod had rusted badly and the celluloid cover cracked. I've replaced it with a custom made rod from black oxide coated stainless steel. I believe that is true because all those I've restored have celluloid covered, carbon steel filler rods but also price codes. These rods were made in the earliest Vacuum-Fil Balances in 1935 before Sheaffer switched to using stainless steel rods. The price codes (this pen is stamped 1000 below the manufacturer's imprint on the barrel) were introduced in 1938. So, this is a post-1938 pen with a pre-1936 filler rod. It's the transparency that makes this celluloid truly amazing.

I believe the Sheaffer Feather Touch 5 nib is one of the best nibs ever. Some will argue that they prefer a Waterman 52, a Wahl-Eversharp or perhaps a vintage OMAS. Those are all wonderful flexible nibs. What I love about the Feather Touch 5 is that it is a soft nib rather than a truly flexible nib. It is not meant to be flexed. Yet, it provides subtle, lovely, line variation with normal writing pressure. It's an all-around nib that is suitable for jotting quit, sloppy notes or for writing a carefully controlled passage. This pen has a price code of 1000 ($10) stamped on the barrel beneath the manufacturer's imprint. Sheaffer started that with the 1938 catalog when they also gave each model a name (Statesman) rather than just a # (C74 KABRI). But, pens from that era have a "new style" plunger knob that is tapered rather than mushroom shaped. And a stainless steel plunger rod. Except when they don't.

Conjecture follows...

I believe that wartime Balance pens (~1939-1941) occasionally were made with the "old style", mushroom shaped filler knob and celluloid covered, carbon steel rods. Otherwise, we wouldn't see these pens with 1938-onward price code stamps.

Furthermore, evidence shows that Sheaffer used silver (coin silver?) base metal rather than brass during wartime. This since brass was used exclusively for more important wartime applications rather than pens.

So I'm quite certain this is a wartime pen though I don't have enough information to narrow down a wartime range of dates. The last Sheaffer catalog featuring the Balance was published in 1941. Reasonable evidence shows the Balance line was replace with the Triumph line in 1942. However, it is unknown if Sheaffer continued to make Balance pens after 1941.
