I believe that is true because all those I've restored have celluloid covered, carbon steel filler rods but also price codes. These rods were made in the earliest Vacuum-Fil Balances in 1935 before Sheaffer switched to using stainless steel rods. The price codes (this pen is stamped 1000 below the manufacturer's imprint on the barrel) were introduced in 1938. So, this is a post-1938 pen with a pre-1936 filler rod. Some will argue that they prefer a Waterman 52, a Wahl-Eversharp or perhaps a vintage OMAS. Those are all wonderful flexible nibs. What I love about the Feather Touch 5 is that it is a soft nib rather than a truly flexible nib. It is not meant to be flexed. Yet, it provides subtle, lovely, line variation with normal writing pressure. It's an all-around nib that is suitable for jotting quit, sloppy notes or for writing a carefully controlled passage. This is indicated by the 875 price code under the barrel imprint that indicates the sale price of $8.75.

I've upgraded the nib to a Golden Spade - so called by my friend Paul Burberry because it is the same size nib as that found on the earlier Balance Premier, or OverSize. Sheaffer stopped making the Premier nibs around 1942 but they introduced a new, large nib in the 1948 Sheaffer Statesman made from injection molded plastic. It is an impressive looking nib on a slender vintage pen. I think it looks particularly good on the earlier celluloid pen.
